I asked a student what her favorite class was and she began listing her favorite teachers. I stopped her and said,
“Oh no I wasn’t talking about teachers I was talking about classes.”
I’ll always remember what she said. She said:
“Mr. Neil, the teacher is the class.”
Wow. Nothing stronger or more empowering than that. Here is this fantastic student sitting in front of me telling me that to her, subjects aren’t important, class content isn’t important. All of that pales in comparison to her teacher.
It doesn’t matter if you have students who “hate” history, math, English, or science. What matters is the teacher because “the teacher is the class.”
We all teach kids. Every one of us can help our students and create classes that will help them for the rest of their lives.
